Spotlight on ScienceDirect


ScienceDirect is a leading full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 11,000 books. There are currently more than 11 million articles/chapters, a content base that is growing at a rate of almost 0.5 million additions per year.
  • 2,500 journals and 11,000 books
  • Averages almost a half-million additions each year
  • Includes digitized versions of pre-1995 journal content
  • Goes as far back as 1823 issues of The Lancet

The UHMC Library now has subscriptions to two online dictionaries:

Oxford Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of 600,000 words— past and present—from across the English-speaking world.

Oxford Language Dictionaries (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish)

The innovative Oxford Language Dictionaries Online site offers essential language resources never before available online: fully searchable, completely comprehensive bilingual dictionaries, and unique study materials that provide extra help with learning and using an expanding range of languages.

Right now they are only available on campus, but very soon will also be remotely available. You can get to the databases from the library's homepage (www.maui.hawaii.edu/library) and click the "Search Us" link.

Get EBSCO on your mobile device!

So you are at the beach and you want to do a little research for that paper you have coming up. But you only have your smart phone. Well, now you can do that research anywhere you can get a signal.


This page features information for both the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad and Android versions of the EBSCOhost Mobile Application. Included are links to download the app from iTunes and the Android Market, authentication instructions, and links to online Help pages that describe how to use the app.

New Database: SocINDEX

The library has a new database: SocINDEX with full text!

SocINDEX™ is the world's most comprehensive and highest quality sociology research database. Its extensive scope and content provide users with a wealth of extremely useful information encompassing the broad spectrum of sociological study.

The database features more than 2.1 million records with subject headings from a 20,000+ term sociological thesaurus designed by subject experts and expert lexicographers. This product also contains informative abstracts for more than 1,300 "core" coverage journals dating as far back as 1895. In addition, this file provides data mined from more than 450 "priority" coverage journals as well as over 2,950 "selective" coverage journals. Further, extensive indexing for books/monographs, conference papers, and other non-periodical content sources is included. Searchable cited references are also provided.

Safari Books Online

The UHMC Library now has a subscription to Safari Books Online, an amazing collection of about 4,000 technology books and other resources accessible online.

What is especially cool about SBO products for network administrators and software developers is that you can copy code snippets directly from your browser window and paste them into your live development environment.

Think of it this way when you visit Borders or Barnes and Noble, you flip through a handful of books and glean perhaps a bit of information here, a bit of information there, and so forth. On the other hand, with Safari Books Online you can run a keyword search across thousands of volumes, aggregating search results by relevance, by date, or by some other criterion of your choosing.

Music and more

UHMC students and faculty now have access to three new streaming media serivices:
  • Naxos Music Library is the world's largest online classical music library. Currently, it offers streaming access to more than 43,030 CDs with more than 616,300 tracks.
    On average, 500 new CDs are added to the library every month.

    The Naxos Music Library offers the catalogs of more than 50 classical, jazz and world music labels with more labels joining every month. Among the labels whose catalogs are included in the service are leading independent classical labels such as BIS, Chandos, CPO, Haenssler, Hungaroton, Marco Polo, Vanguard Classics, VOX, and of course Naxos. World music content is provided by ARC, Celestial Harmonies and others; and there is also jazz, film music, nostalgia, classic and contemporary rock content. 
  •  Naxos Spoken Word Library - literature and poetry ranging from medieval times to the twentieth century, and many newly written texts supplement an ever-expanding range of non-fiction. 
  • Naxos Jazz Library - streaming jazz library.
The Naxos libraries can be accessed from any internet enabled device. An iPhone/iPod touch/iPad application is available from the iTunes Store.

The UHMC Library also provides access to Films on Demand.  This streaming media service gives UHMC students and faculty access to thousands of films online.

Pass the popcorn

Films on Demand (streaming online video ) is now available to all UHMC students, faculty, and staff. Please access this resource via the UHMC Library website. Direct links or bookmarks will not work.

These films are available for use in classrooms and online. You can embed links to the whole video or parts into an online course, syllabus, or any other way you want to use them.  Students also have full access and can use the videos in presentations and papers.

Encyclopædia Britannica

The library's new online resource, Encyclopædia Britannica, is one of the most complete and accurate information sources in the world. It contains both short and book-length articles on every subject.

In addition to the 73,000 articles of the encyclopedia, the Britannica also includes:
  • Britannica Concise Encyclopedia features over 28,000 short articles. These articles can provide quick answers to questions about history, art, science, and other subjects.
  • Britannica's multimedia database includes thousands of photographs, illustrations, and sound files. You can find these items through search and many also accompany encyclopedia articles.
  • Resources in Britannica's Internet Guide can complement the information found in the encyclopedias. Britannica editors have reviewed thousands of Web sites to ensure their quality and appropriateness.
  • Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus includes thousands of entries with definitions, pronunciation guides, word histories, synonyms, and antonyms are available through the dictionary and thesaurus.
  • Notable Quotations with more than 4000 quotations from both historical and contemporary men and women on a wide variety of topics can both entertain and provoke new ideas.
  • Gateway to the Classics This selection of 225 works by 140 authors introduces you to the great writing and ideas of the Western world. You can find stories, essays, speeches, and more.

The library has a new database: Gallup Brain. this database is a searchable, living record of 70 years of public opinion. Here you'll find answers to more than 136,000 questions, and responses from more than 3.5 million people interviewed by The Gallup Poll since 1935.

The library now subscribes to ebrary's Academic Complete, a growing eBook collection that spans all academic subject areas.
