FAQ about the library renovation

  • Where will the library be moved to?
    • Library Circulation Services will be located in The Learning Center (TLC).

  • Why is the building closing?
    • Renovation, new flooring, painting, and air conditioner repair.
  • How long will the building be closed?
    • Approximately 6 months.
  • Will I still be able to borrow books?
    • The library's collection will not be available. You will be able to get books via intra-system loan (ISL) from the other UH system libraries.
    • The library also has a collection of about 70,000 online E-Books from net Library and eBrary.
  • How long does it take to get ISL books?
    • About 10 working days.
  • What is the cost?
    • While the library is closed, ISL books will be free.
  • How about periodical articles?
    • The library has numerous full-text online periodical databases which can be accessed from the Library's homepage.
  • Will I still be able to borrow DVDs?
    • No.
  • Will I be able to borrow reserves?
    • Reserve items will be boxed with the library collection or returned to instructors, who can arrange for students to use them.
  • What circulation services will be offered at TLC?:
    • You will be able to:
      • pay fines and fees,
      • pick up ISL items,
      • return items,
      • make an appointment with a reference librarian.
  • How can I return items when you are closed?
    • You may return items in the library dropbox, outside the TLC.
  • How will I do my research or request ISLs?
    • You can do library research from any Internet enabled computer--at The Learning Center, the Ka Lama Computer Lab, at home, or anywhere!
    • ISLs are requested via the Internet (on any Internet computer), from the library Voyager site....at The Learning Center, the Ka Lama Computer Lab, at home, or anywhere!
  • Where will student IDs be made?
    • Ka Lama Computing Center.
  • What do I do if I need to talk to a librarian?
    • Librarians will be available at various venues and times.
    • You will be able to email, instant message, or call a librarian for help.
    • You will be able to schedule a conference with a librarian.
    • Got to the library's Ask a Librarian page.
  • Will you still be offering library instruction classes?
    • Yes, but not in the library classroom.
  • What do I do if I need to talk to the library staff?
    • You will be able to email, instant message or call a staff member.
  • What will the library staff be doing?
    • Library circulation staff will be providing services from TLC and implementing improvements in the library's systems.
    • Librarians will be providing reference services, teaching library literacy to students in their classrooms, offering workshops, providing individualized teaching of databases and other library resources, and doing special projects.
    • Librarians will be available via email, instant messaging, in person at set times in various campus locations, and by appointment.
    • Librarians will receive faculty requests for acquisitions to support their classes.
    • Technical Services library staff will be processing new materials, maintaining the library's homepage, databases, E-books, digitizing library data and other special projects.
    • The Distance Education Librarian will be visiting the Centers to assess library services, expand and set up services, train staff, and provide instruction.
