Come and Play
The library has a wonderful selection of old-time games and puzzles for you to play! Come in and give them a try.
Art and chalk
The Head Start students decorated the front of the library this morning with a lot of creativity and sidewalk chalk! We now have fish, sharks, a lot of flowers and a rainbow! The students loved the bubbles descending from the bubble machine located on the balcony. To refresh the artists, everyone was treated to GoGurt and water.

UHMC Art Show
Come join us in the UHMC Library to celebrate the opening of the Student Art Exhibit tomorrow March 16 noon
to 1:00 PM. Refreshments will be served. The exhibition, celebrating
the creative work of our students from fall and spring semesters, will
be on view until May 2.

poi dogs in the library
As part of the UHMC LAUNCH PARTY this Friday, the library is hosting a
Paintings & Poetry exhibit from 4:30 to 8:30pm. This event features
paintings by Pat Masumoto and Mike Takemoto from their recent Schaefer
International Gallery “Poi Dog” exhibit.
At the library's exhibit opening on Friday August 25, Pat Masumoto will perform
her poetry that relates to her paintings. In her series of “poi dog”
paintings and poetry that offer us a view of growing up in Lahaina,
Masumoto remembers absorbing the domestic aesthetics of the
Portuguese, Japanese and Hawaiian households.
As a UHMC professor, Mike Takemoto is no stranger to human diversity,
and he gives us a sampling of this experience in his portraits of
family, friends and his art students.
The pidgin term “poi dog” was chosen by the group of talented artists
as the name for the remarkable Schaefer Gallery exhibit, describing
both the mixture of all of us and within each of us. At Friday's
presentation of "poi dogs," paintings and poetry collide, alongside a
library collection of materials that consider the literal and
conceptual aspects of "poi dog."
This paintings & poetry exhibit will be viewable in the UHMC Library
through the month of September.

Ellen & friends celebrate freedom to read during Banned Book Week

The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.
Hawai‘i Family Portraits
Hawai‘i Family Portraits will be on display in the Library for public viewing, from September 20 through October 15, during Library hours (M-Th: 8am-6pm, Friday: 10am-4pm, closed weekends).
Hawai‘i Family Portraits is a project by the Equality Hawai‘i Foundation (with support from The Gill Foundation and Hawai‘i People's Fund) that invites viewers to take a journey with some of Hawai‘i’s families ... sharing their joys, tears, tragedies and triumphs as they negotiate life in The Aloha State.
The families in these photographs are unique. Daily, they face discrimination, denial of rights, rejection and persecution because of who they are or who they love.
They are parents of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT) children. They are GLBT parents themselves, raising beautiful, vibrant children. They are GLBT couples, simply trying to build lives together. They are individuals, some abandoned or misunderstood by their biological families, finding safety and love with a chosen, extended ’ohana.
Although very different in their composition and experiences, these families are bound by a common thread ... a unifying sense of love, devotion and commitment that conquers all challenges.
Captured through the lens of professional photographer Mike Ang, these family portraits expand community’s definition of family ... an expansion that embraces, nurtures and celebrates all families in our state of Aloha.
The Hawai‘i Family Portraits display is presented at the UH Maui Library in conjunction with National Constitution Month. These portraits are being displayed alongside books and media that bring awareness to the contemporary issues surrounding constitutional rights.

Student art show
The UHMC student art show is now on in the library. Come and see the exceptional art our very talented students have created.
On display is student art from Jennifer Owen's ceramics classes, Mike Takemoto's drawing and painting classes, and Cheryl Maeda's fashion technology classes.
Art Reception
On April 21 at 4 PM the library will be hosting a reception for artists Renee Wilcox and Robert D. Wehrman. Both artists have loaned art to the UHMC library. Please come to the reception.
Food and coffee will be provided.
Happy Girls' Day
Happy Girls' Day The library is celebrating Hinamatsuri (Girls' Day). Come over and get a treat!! On display is the wonderful gift collection of books from the Nippon Foundation. This organization has graciously given UH Maui College a gift of 68 books on Japan. Please come to the library to see these interesting and informative books on display.
Library Lounge: Not Your Granny's Crochet
At the next Library Lounge, on December 7, we will be learning to crochet. This is not your granny's crochet! We will have patterns for amigurumi (Japanese crocheted dolls) for the more advanced crocheter. If you are new to crochet, you will be shown some easy stitches and how to make a simple bag for a phone or camera.
Bring a size F or G crochet needle and some worsted weight yarn (like Red Heart from the Ben Franklin store or Walmart) or some ribbon yarn (not regular ribbon, this yarn is in the yarn section and comes in a ball).
The Library Lounge is held Mondays from 5-6 PM at the MCC Library. Coffee and snacks are provided.

Maui CC student (and successful "conscious embroidery" business owner) Robin will lead us through some basic free-form embroidery techniques. Supplies provided.
